“Did God really say that?” This was the sly, slippery question Satan posed to Adam and Eve as an enticement to ignore a clear commandment from God and start living by their own rules. Jesus tells the religious leaders they’ve fallen into a similar trap by imposing their own beloved traditions upon others while neglecting God’s laws. (Mark 7) The apostle Paul lays out God’s design for marriage, modeled on Christ’s faithfulness to us. (Ephesians 5) These may challenge our own notions about male and female roles. But the Holy One of Israel only wants to guide us into a life of freedom and fulfillment, the source of which is faith.
