As another school year approaches, here’s a timely question: “What makes a person wise?” Many people mistake things like a quick wit, persuasive rhetoric, or encyclopedic knowledge for wisdom. God’s Word, however, points not to any innate human attribute, but to a reverence for God that recognizes our dependence upon Him. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10) Human reason, that wonderful tool we use for understanding the world, can sometimes become a stumbling block to deeper wisdom. When Jesus said, “Whoever feeds on me will live because of me,” many shook their heads and walked away. (John 6:57) Lord Jesus, guide us by your words, and teach us to walk as wise children of faith! (Ephesians 5:15)
