The prospect of Judgment Day is a sobering -perhaps even scary- thought for many Christians. But alongside the dire predictions of social upheaval and material destruction in today’s readings is an unmistakable note of joy. “Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things!” (Ps.98:1) God’s perfect justice and His righteousness offered in Christ are indeed marvelous things. And there is real joy in knowing that He will judge the earth with wisdom and equity — something you and I cannot (and dare not attempt to) do.
