It is common knowledge that human beings cannot survive long without food and water. We even know the standard rule — 2 weeks without food or just 3 days without water (!) — and our life is in peril. Today’s readings invite reflection on what is needed for our soul’s survival. The Israelites’ complaints of thirst in the desert became a spiritual issue when she stopped trusting – and starting testing – the LORD (Ex 17). Jesus offers the Samaritan woman “living water” to redeem her life from sin and deliver her people into God’s eternal kingdom
