Joy…and misery. We can find both attitudes on display in today’s readings, along with an important lesson from Jesus about the sources of both. King Solomon groaned in frustration over his efforts to govern the temporal affairs of a nation and ensure a lasting legacy for its people (Eccl 2). In our Gospel, a man tries to draw Jesus into a nasty inheritance dispute with his brother (Lk 12). Both men’s minds and hearts are so wrapped up in worries about wealth and legacy that they cannot see theĀ greater destiny God desires for them. By contrast, today’s psalm exudes joy which comes from being in God’s eternal presence and knowing that we belong to Him (Ps 100). Baptized into Christ, we have a new and holy identity, one that is being daily renewed and restored into the image of our Creator. Now that is something to rejoice about! (Col 3)
