“That’s not fair!” Even as young children, you and I had a strong sense of fairness (i.e. justice), especially when we perceived ourselves to be on the losing end of a deal! A love for justice is one of God’s essential attributes. But this Sunday’s readings remind us that our understanding of what’s fair doesn’t always match His. “My ways are not your ways, declares the Lord.” (Is.55:8) Jesus’ Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard invites us to consider God’s definition of fairness, and to think differently about our labors in His Kingdom. (Mt.20)
